Originally extracted from a Tibetan roe deer, natural musk has been banned in perfumery since 1973. Synthetic molecules to replace it appear at the end of the 19th century. Today there is a wide range of musk notes, with fruity, woody or wild facets. Musks are mainly very persistent and relatively low-volatile base notes. They have been widely used in laundry detergents and fabric softeners which is why they are commonly called white musks, as they evoke the scent of clean, soft laundry, giving a comfortable sensation suitable for any type of fragrance. Thanks to their inimitable softness, much appreciated by the general public, musk notes are now found in the vast majority of women's and men's perfumes.
